Rules and Regulations

I. APPLICATION

Participation in VKIBC NYC Finals is by invitation only. All dancers and choreographers need first to submit an Application on our web site.  After the Application is reviewed, only those dancers and choreographers invited to participate can submit a Registration in the Classical Competition, the Contemporary and Neo Classical Competition, and/or the Choreography Competition.

NOTE: An audition video must be submitted along with the application form.  The video must showcase at least one variation as a solo OR duet/ensemble if applicable, be no longer than 5 minutes and be in the form of a YouTube or Vimeo link.

Application fees (all dancers):

  • US$75 if applying to ONE competition
  • US$100 if applying to TWO competitions
  • US$120 if applying to THREE competitions

Please note: ALL fees are non-refundable.

Note: We encourage dancers and choreographers who are invited to compete and who need a visa to the United States to request a letter of invitation as early as possible. It happened in the past that artists did not get their visa as they started too late the application process.
Foreign dancers and choreographers: if you need a letter of invitation, for visa reason, please email vkibc.registrar@gmail.com.

II. REGISTRATION

REQUIREMENTS

Reminder: ONLY those dancers and choreographers invited to participate should fill a Registration form.

All registrations are considered incomplete and will not be reviewed without a photocopy of passport information page with date of birth and photo for foreign dancers OR a valid ID for US dancers. For security purposes, please email IDs to vkibc.registrar@gmail.com.

Note to foreign dancers and choreographers:
If you need a letter of invitation, for visa purposes, please email vkibc.registrar@gmail.com.

Music submissions will open on January 16th, 2018 and close on February 24th, 2018.  
The Classical and Contemporary Compulsory pieces will be annouced on January 16th, 2018.

Deadline for Registration is February 24th, 2018.

A. CLASSICAL COMPETITION

Registration for the Classical Competition is open to dancers ages 11-26 and is divided in 5 divisions:

  • Youth (11-12)
  • Student (13-14)
  • Junior (15-17)
  • Senior 1 (18-21)
  • Senior 2 (22-26)

All competing ages are as of January 1, 2018.

Dancers must choose all classical variations from the Repertoire List. Contemporary pieces performed by dancers, or presented by choreographers, must have been choreographed between 2009 and 2018.

Contemporary Pieces:
  • Solo: No longer than 2.5 minutes
  • Duet: No longer than 3.5 minutes


Participants competing with a Pas de Deux can have a non-competing partner. Partners in a Pas de Deux can be from different divisions. Classification is done individually. In the case of a Pas de Deux or duet where both dancers are competing, if one of the competing partners does not pass to the following round, he/she has the obligation to continue partnering as long as his/her partner is still competing.
Youth:
One Round: 2 Classical Solos

Student:
1st Round: 1 Classical Solo AND 1 Contemporary Solo or Duet
2nd Round (Final): 2 Classical Solos (one may be repeated from previous round) OR 1 Classical Pas de Deux

Junior:
1st Round: 2 Classical Solos OR 1 Classical Pas de Deux
2nd Round: 1 Classical Solo AND 1 Contemporary Solo or Duet
3rd Round (Final): 2 Classical Solos (one may be repeated from previous rounds) OR 1 Classical Pas de Deux

Senior 1 and 2:
1st Round: 2 Classical Solos OR 1 Classical Pas de Deux
2nd Round: One Compulsory Classical Variation AND one Compulsory Contemporary Solo
  • Females and Males Compulsory Classical: To be announced
  • Females and Males Compulsory Contemporary: To be announced
3rd Round (Final): Choice of:
  • 2 Classical Solos (one may be repeated from previous rounds) and 1 Contemporary Solo or Duet

    OR
  • 1 Classical Pas de Deux and 1 Contemporary Solo or Duet of participant’s choice.


FEES
Registration fees:
Classical Competition
  • Youth Division: $250
  • Student Division: $350
  • Junior Division: $350
  • Senior Division: $350

Classical Competition fees include all classical pieces to be performed from the repertoire, master classes and stage run through rehearsals.

B. CONTEMPORARY AND NEO CLASSICAL COMPETITION

Contemporary: Dancers on demi pointe or barefoot.
Neo Classical: Dancers on pointe.

Registration for the Contemporary and Neo Classical Competition is possible in the following divisions:

  • SD1 = SOLO Division I (12 and under)
  • SD2 = SOLO Division II (13-14)
  • SD3 = SOLO Division III (15-17)
  • SD4 = SOLO Division IV (18 and up)
  • DE1 = DUET or ENSEMBLE Division I (11-14)
  • DE2 = DUET or ENSEMBLE Division II (15-19)
  • DE3 = DUET or ENSEMBLE Division III (20 and up)


All competing ages are as of January 1, 2018.
Pieces performed by dancers must have been choreographed between 2009 and 2018.

Length of pieces:
  • Solo: No longer than 4 minutes
  • Duet: No longer than 5 minutes
  • Ensemble: No longer than 6 minutes


Solo - All participants compete with two contemporary solos.
Duet - Both participants must compete. There are no requirements for how many duets dancers must compete with.
Ensemble - All members of the ensemble are required to compete and must pay the application and registration fee.

Contemporary or Neo Classical piece can also be entered in the Choreography competition (Choreography fee applies).

Contemporary and Neo Classical Competition
  • Solo: $250 for 2 pieces danced
  • Duet: $125 per dancer for 1 piece danced
  • Ensemble (3 or more): $30 per dancer for 1 piece danced

C. CHOREOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Registration for the Choreography Competition is open to all ages for young professionals, dance students and choreographers.

Pieces presented by choreographers must have been choreographed between 2009 and 2018.

Length of pieces:

  • Solo: No longer than 4 minutes
  • Duet: No longer than 5 minutes
  • Ensemble: No longer than 6 minutes


Choreographer(s) may also compete as a dancer (Dancer fee applies).
Dancers in the piece who are NOT competing DO NOT need to fill out/pay the application/registration. If the dancer(s) and/or the choreographer is/are competing, each person must fill out/pay for both the Contemporary and Neo Classical group application and registration.

Registration (Reminder: invited choreographers only):

Choreography Competition
  • 1 Choreography submission: $130
  • 2 Choreography submissions: $180
  • 3 Choreography submissions: $280

There is no limitation to the amount of pieces you can enter. If you are entering more than three pieces, please email vkibc.registrar@gmail.com before registering. Choreographer can perform his/her piece as non competing dancer, or have piece performed by non competing dancer(s): dancer fee applies. Choreographer may also compete as dancer: dancer fee applies.

III. PAYMENT

When submitting payment, either by PayPal or U.S. Check, please insert the name of the participant the fee covers in the Memo section. If the participant's name is not submitted with the payment, the application/registration will remain incomplete.

IV. COMPETITION SCHEDULE

Competition will be held at Peter Norton Symphony Space: 2537 Broadway, New York, NY 10025

Master classes will be held at New York City Center: 131 West 55th Street, New York, NY 10019

V. REGULATIONS

ONLINE SIGNATURES
All electronic signatures are considered binding official signatures.

PERSONAL INSURANCE
Participant or legal representative declares having all necessary insurance for the duration of the participation in the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition. VKIBC cannot be held responsible for an emergency of any nature, including but not limited to medical or personal.

LIABILITY WAIVER
All participants need to bring with them the “LIABILITY WAIVER AND RELEASE” form completed and signed on the first day of the competition.

CHOREOGRAPHY AND MUSIC RIGHTS
Participants must ensure they have cleared all dance and music rights before performing their contemporary pieces. VKIBC cannot be held responsible for any piece performed without the proper clearances.

PHOTO / VIDEO
1. During the Competition: Dancer or his/her legal representative grants VKIBC the perpetual and irrevocable right to use his/her name, photographs or video footage in all forms and in all media and in all manners, without any restrictions for editorial, advertising, trade promotion, exhibition, or any other lawful purpose. Dancer or his/her legal representative waives any right to inspect or approve the video footage or photograph(s) or finished version(s), including written copy that may be created and appear in connection therewith. Dancer or his/her legal representative agrees that the Photographer(s) and Videographer(s) own the copyright of these photographs and video footage, and hereby waives any claims he/she may have based on any usage of the photographs and video footage, or works derived therefrom.
2. Souvenir Book: Dancer or his/her legal representative authorizes use of his/her headshot for publication in the Souvenir Book.

COSTUMES / PROPS
VKIBC does not require costumes for pieces, though VKIBC does recommend them as it enhances the dancer's performance. If the dancer is not able to use costuming, VKBIC asks the dancer to wear clean practice clothes (e.g. black leotard, clean tights).
Props are permitted; they must be moved on stage by the dancers and removed promptly after their pieces.
Baby powder is not allowed.
