NEW YORK CITY FINALS

The Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition (VKIBC) started in 2011 as a classical ballet competition. In 2014 VKIBC's Contemporary Dance and Choreography Competition was established, geared to contemporary dance and young choreographers.

I. GENERAL INFORMATION

REGISTRATION
Registration for the Classical Competition is open to dancers ages 11-26 and is divided in 4 divisions:

  • Youth (11-12)
  • Student (13-14)
  • Junior (15-17)
  • Senior (18-26)

All competing ages are as of January 1, 2017.

Registration for the Contemporary Competition is open to dancers of all ages and is divided in 4 divisions:
  • Division I (12 and under)
  • Division II (13-14)
  • Division III (15-17)
  • Division IV (18 and up)

All competing ages are as of January 1, 2017.

Registration for duets and groups within the Contemporary Competition is open to all ages.

Registration for the Choreography Competition is open to all ages for young professionals, dance students and choreographers.

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
Registration is by invitation. All dancers need first submit an application on our web site (see Application tab). After the application is reviewed, only those dancers invited can submit the Registration to the Classical Competition, the Contemporary Competition and/or the Choreography Competition.

All registrations are considered incomplete and will not be reviewed without a photocopy of passport information page with date of birth and photo for foreign dancers OR a valid ID for US dancers. For security purposes, please email IDs to vkibc.registrar@gmail.com.

CLASSICAL COMPETITION
  • Dancers must choose all classical variations from the Repertoire List.
  • Senior Division Contemporary Compulsory solos will be announced 8 weeks prior to the competition date.
  • Contemporary pieces performed by dancers, or presented by choreographers, must have been choreographed between 2008 and 2017.
  • Contemporary Pieces:
    • Solos: No longer than 2.5 minutes
    • Duets: No longer than 4 minutes
  • Participants competing with a Pas de Deux can have a non-competing partner.
  • Partners in a Pas de Deux can be from different divisions. Classification is done individually.
  • In the case of a Pas de Deux or duet where both dancers are competing, if one of the competing partners does not pass to the following round, he/she has the obligation to continue partnering as long as his/her partner is still competing.
Youth:
1st Round: 2 Classical Solos

Student:
1st Round: 1 Classical Solo AND 1 Contemporary Solo or Duet
2nd Round (Final): 2 Classical Solos (one may be repeated from previous round) OR 1 Classical Pas de Deux

Junior:
1st Round: 2 Classical Solos OR 1 Classical Pas de Deux
2nd Round: 1 Classical Solo AND 1 Contemporary Solo or Duet>3rd Round (Final): 2 Classical Solos (one may be repeated from previous rounds) OR 1 Classical Pas de Deux

Senior:
1st Round: 2 Classical Solos OR 1 Classical Pas de Deux
2nd Round: One Compulsory Classical Variation AND one Compulsory Contemporary Solo

Males Classical: Choice of male solo from "La Vivandiere" OR male solo from Grand Pas de Deux (Wedding Pas de Deux) "Sleeping Beauty" ONLY ONE SOLO

Females Classical: Choice of female solo from "La Vivandiere" (lead solo) OR female solo from Grand Pas de Deux (Wedding Pas de Deux) "Sleeping Beauty" ONLY ONE SOLO

The Compulsory Contemporary solos have been announced.  Please be sure to apply, register and submit all required payments and documentation to receive the link to the compulsory piece.


3rd Round (Final): 2 Classical Solos (one may be repeated from previous rounds) and 1 Contemporary Solo or Duet OR 1 Classical Pas de Deux and 1 Contemporary Solo or Duet of participant’s choice.

CONTEMPORARY COMPETITION
Pieces performed by dancers, or presented by choreographers, must have been choreographed between 2008 and 2017.

Length of pieces:

  • Solos: No longer than 4 minutes
  • Duets: No longer than 5.5 minutes
  • Groups: No longer than 6 minutes


Solos-All participants compete with two contemporary solos.
Duets-Participant in duet can have a non-competing partner. There are no requirements for how many duets dancers must compete with.

Contemporary pieces can also be entered in the Choreography competition (Choreography fee applies).

CHOREOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Pieces performed by dancers, or presented by choreographers, must have been choreographed between 2008 and 2017.

Length of pieces:

  • Solos: No longer than 4 minutes
  • Duets: No longer than 5.5 minutes
  • Groups: No longer than 6 minutes


Choreographer(s) may also compete as a dancer (Dancer fee applies). If the dancer(s) in the piece are NOT competing, they DO NOT need to fill out/pay the application/registration. If the dancer(s) and/or the choreographer are competing, each person must fill out/pay for both the contemporary group application and registration.

NYC FINALS FEES
Payment may be accepted by PayPal or U.S. Check ONLY (figures in US dollars).

Application (all dancers):

  • $50 per dancer applying to ONE competition
  • $80 per dancer applying to TWO competitions
  • $100 per dancer applying to THREE competitions


Registration (invited dancers):
Classical Competition

  • Youth Division: $200
  • Student Division: $300
  • Junior Division: $300
  • Senior Division: $300

  • Solo: $200 for 2 pieces danced
  • Duet: $100 per dancer for 1 piece danced
  • Group (3 or more): $25 per dancer for 1 piece danced

  • 1 Choreography submission: $100
  • 2 Choreography submissions: $150
  • 3 Choreography submissions: $250

Classical Competition fees include all classical pieces to be performed from the repertoire, master classes and rehearsals.

Contemporary and Choreography Competition fees include all pieces to be performed, master classes and rehearsals.

HOUSING
VKIBC does not provide housing

VISAS
Upon request, VKIBC will provide a letter of invitation to dancers who need to apply for a visa to enter the United States. A letter of invitation will only be sent out once the participant has applied, registered, paid and sent in all appropriate documentation.

Please Note: We encourage dancers who need a visa to the United States to request as early as possible the letter of invitation. We have seen in the past many dancers not getting their visa as they started too late the application process.

All electronic signatures are considered binding official signatures.

PERSONAL INSURANCE
Participant or legal representative declares having all necessary insurance for the duration of the participation in Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition. VKIBC cannot be held responsible for an emergency of any nature, including but not limited to medical or personal.

LIABILITY WAIVER
All participants are asked to check yes that they have read and understand the VKIBC rules and regulations including the liability waiver. Read the release of responsibility:

CHOREOGRAPHY AND MUSIC RIGHTS
Participants must ensure they have cleared all dance and music rights before performing their contemporary pieces. VKIBC cannot be held responsible for any piece performed without the proper clearances.

PHOTO / VIDEO
1. During the Competition: Dancer or his/her legal representative grants VKIBC the perpetual and irrevocable right to use his/her name, photographs or video footage in all forms and in all media and in all manners, without any restrictions for editorial, advertising, trade promotion, exhibition, or any other lawful purpose. Dancer or his/her legal representative waives any right to inspect or approve the video footage or photograph(s) or finished version(s), including written copy that may be created and appear in connection therewith. Dancer or his/her legal representative agrees that the Photographer(s) and Videographer(s) own the copyright of these photographs and video footage, and hereby waives any claims he/she may have based on any usage of the photographs and video footage, or works derived therefrom.
2. Souvenir Book: Dancer or his/her legal representative authorizes use of his/her headshot for publication in the Souvenir Book.

COSTUMES / PROPS
VKIBC does not require costumes for pieces, though VKIBC does recommend them as it enhances the dancer's performance. If the dancer is not able to use costuming, VKBIC asks the dancer to wear clean practice clothes (e.g. black leotard, clean tights). Props are permitted; however, baby powder is not allowed.

I attest, as a Participant, or as the parent or legal guardian of the minor referred to as Participant in Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition (VKIBC), that Participant is physically fit to participate.

In participating in VKIBC competition, which includes, but may not be limited to performing on stage, dance classes, rehearsals, or any other activity organized by Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition , Participant or the parent or legal guardian of the participating minor hereby waives and releases all claims, liabilities, actions, damages, costs or expenses of any nature whatsoever for injuries the participant might sustain, known or unknown, arising out of the Competition or its related activities, now or at all times in the future. Participant, or the parent or legal guardian of the minor referred to as Participant attests carrying insurance coverage, should Participant require medical attention while attending VKIBC.

The Participant or, in case of a minor the parent or legal guardian, agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition or any individual identified as associated with the organization of the Competition, from and against any and all liabilities, claims, actions, damages, costs or expenses of any nature whatsoever, whether in law or equity, known or unknown, incurred by Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition and arising out of, or in any way related, directly or indirectly, to the Participant’s attending the Competition.

By signing this Liability Waiver and Release, Participant, or the parent or legal guardian of the minor referred to as Participant, declares understanding and agreeing to the terms of this document, and further agrees to abide by Valentina Kozlova International Ballet
Competition’s policies and regulations.
